The Mayans advanced knowledge of astrology and mathematics enabled them to create a system of calendars that are more precise than our current Gregorian Calendar.
On the date December 21st, 2012 A.D. (13.0.0.0.0 in the Long Count), represents an extremely close conjunction of the Winter Solstice Sun with the crossing point of the Galactic Equator (Equator of the Milky Way) and the Ecliptic (path of the Sun), what that ancient Maya recognized as the Sacred Tree.
This is an event that has been coming to resonance very slowly over thousands and thousands of years. This event only happens every 26,000 years. We will also be experiencing a precession of the equinox. The Mayan calendar is above all things very accurate with the positions of the celestial bodies in the sky at precise times.
The Tzolkin is a 260-day calendar based around the period of human gestation. It is composed of 20 day-signs, each of which has 13 variations, and was (and still is) used to determine character traits and time harmonics, in a similar way to Western astrology. The Maya also used a 365-day calendar called the Haab, and a Venus calendar, plus others. They measured long time periods by means of a Long Count, in which one 360-day year (a "Tun"), consists of 18 x 20-day "months" ("Uinals"). Twenty of these Tuns is a Katun; 20 Katuns is a Baktun (nearly 400 years); and 13 Baktuns adds up to a "Great Cycle" of 1,872,000 days, ( 5200 Tuns, or about 5125 years)
Jose Arguelles has pointed out that the Tzolkin is a harmonic of the Great Cycle, and can be used to map history, as if it is measuring not individual gestation but species gestation, since 5 Great Cycles add to exactly 26,000 Tuns; the "Grand Year" or precession of the equinoxes - a higher harmonic of 260.
NOTE: The astronomer Philip Plait has stated very clearly that the Mayan calendar does not end in 2012 at all, that it is like the odometer on your car, as each section of the odometer reaches 9 and then clicks over to 0, the next number to it starts a new cycle, so that when all the numbers again reach 0 all the way across the odometer - the last number will change from 1 to 2 and the new cycle starts all over again.
According to Mayan calculations, the current cycle of the world is due to end in December 2012. The Mayan calendar was created in the year 3372 BC (using the Christian calendar), just at the end of the last cycle.
The Mayans described the cycles as "worlds" and stated that only certain life forms made the transition from one world to the next. The calendar, written over 5,000 years ago, predicted the exact day the Threshold Level would be passed.
In our Milky Way Galaxy our solar system cyclically moves above and below the galactic plane. As stars and planetary systems approach the galactic plane the gravitational influence increases which disturbs the stability of each planet. The passage through the densest portion of the gravitational plane is the direct cause of the devastating cycles and pole shifts that we see recorded throughout Earth's history. The Mayans themselves called this the Dark Rift. They state that the end of each age in which brings about devastation is defined by the Earth sitting on the Dark Rift.
This gravitational instability is caused by the super massive black hole found in the center of our galaxy, with its strongest influence on the galactic plane. Passing bodies, comets and other meteors will be influenced as well.
The Mayans stated a fiery dragon would breath upon the earth. The fire would flow from the serpents mouth when the tree of life, the Sun, Moon and Earth align with the Galactic equator (The Galactic Plane).
Gamma Rays may produce an increase in energy and possibly light. As we near the galactic equator we will may see a bright start at the point where all these gamma rays originate.

Physicists at nearly a dozen research institutions, including New York University, have discovered evidence for very high energy gamma rays emitting from the Milky Way, marking the highest energies ever detected from the galactic equator. Their findings, published in the Dec. 16 2008 issue of the Physical Review of Letters, were obtained using the Milagro Gamma Ray Observatory, a new detector located near Los Alamos, N.M., that allows monitoring of the northern sky on a 24-hour, 7-day-per-week basis.
Gamma rays are considered by scientists to be the best probe of cosmic rays outside the solar neighborhood.
The Mayans, Time and Cosmology
For the Mayans, the position of the Sun determined the solstices, equinoxes and new years. The pyramid of Kukulcan at Chichen-Itza in Mexico is an excellent example of how well the Mayans kept time.
Taking into account the Mythos of the culture
Simply stated, the Mayan "prophecies" are based on the Popol Vuh, which is the Mayan Creation Myth story and the books of the Chilam Balam. Neither the Popol Vuh nor the books of the Chilam Balam state 2012 will be a cataclysmic day.
"The one and only true 2012 prophecy that I perceive is the one that exists in the Maya Creation Myth (the Popol Vuh), which is reinforced by the astral theology encoded onto the carved monuments at Izapa – the place that invented the 2012 calendar," stated Jenkins. "If this is the prophecy you are referring to, the first part of it has already come to pass. It has to do with the self serving egoism (Seven Macaw) controlling and deceiving people at the end of the cycle. The second part of the prophecy is indeterminate and will be experienced differently for each individual, as it involves the challenges of placing ego back into right relationship with the true eternal self (One Hunahpu), through sacrificing the illusions installed by ego. The second part of the prophecy is indeterminate, and not definitive in some kind of predetermined vision of a fated future, because free will exists."
Gregg Prescott recently visited the Mayan ruins in Tulum and spoke with a Mayan gentleman by the name of Beto who stated, “The last and current lines of humans were made from corn because humans, like corn, will come from the dirt and follow a similar cycle. Corn begins with a seed in the dirt, becomes a corn stalk and eventually food. At this point, the corn stalk dies and goes back into the dirt as the cycle continues once again. The cycle of planting corn is every 260 days, the same as human gestation.”
According to Beto, "When katun 20 comes (12/21/2012), the people of corn will no longer be humans". When he asked Beto to elaborate further on this statement to which he replied, "Something bigger will happen to change our perspective of life."
We're currently on the Mayan's fifth Sun. The First Sun was destroyed by water, the second by fire, the third by hurricanes and the fourth by natural catastrophes. On this current sun, we are called the "People of Corn".
2012: DNA Upgrade?
Through conjecture, one could surmise that 12-21-12 will also end in catastrophe but there is no indication that this will occur.
There are some interesting points behind the Mayan calendar end date. On 12/21/2012, the sun, Earth and the center of the Milky Way Galaxy align in an event that happens only once every 26,000 years or so. It's amazing to think how the Mayans knew this over 3,000 years ago.
If you look at the lineage of man, "somehow" we went from homo erectus to homo habilis to homo sapien without any gradual change between lineages. In other words, we had a DNA upgrade in each scenario. Will this pattern continue in 2012?
Through "The Secret" we've already learned how to tap into the 5th dimension by having thoughts equal manifestations. There is still work and effort needed for our thoughts to become manifestations at this point in time.
In the end, we are responsible for deciding our fate. God is opening the door for us but we need to prove to him that we want to serve creation and not selfish ideals. To sit back and say "I can't wait for 2012 because then the world will be made perfect" is to complete miss the point. We are responsible for our future. There is no sense in trying to rally against some ambiguous New World Order or worry yourself sick about World War 3.
Instead, worry about your personal growth. If you refine yourself through the process of doing spiritual work you will begin to develop the faculties you need to survive in the future. Intuition, telepathy, good luck, etc. will be provided given that you have faith in higher forces and do the work required to obtain them.
